Four decisions to
build your AI strategy

AI strategy can easily stay at the level of ambition: improve productivity, accelerate innovation, transform how work gets done. Turning that ambition into action requires a more specific set of decisions.

Start with four: the business outcome you want to achieve, the department where that outcome matters most, the workflows that need to change, and the metrics that will tell you whether those changes are working.

Use those decisions to define a focused first wave of AI adoption: where you’ll begin, which workflows you’ll pilot, and how you’ll measure progress.

Put your plan into action

These four decisions require both a business perspective and knowledge of how the work gets done. Bring together the people who can provide that input.

Use the Set the Strategy Workshop Guide to work through the decisions together. It provides an agenda, questions for each stage, and recommendations for who should participate. The AI Leader Strategy Scorecard provides a place to record the outcome, department, workflows, owners, metrics, and review dates.

Your first decisions don’t have to be your final ones. As you learn from the pilot, a workflow may change, an owner may shift, or a target may need to be revised. Take what you learn, refine the plan, and decide what to continue, change, or scale.
